Introducing Jolicloud 1.1

by Tariq Krim

October 7th, 2010

I wanted to share the latest updates on Jolicloud. The team has been working on Jolicloud 1.1, the new version that will be available in November. I have been playing with Jolicloud 1.1 for a couple weeks and it’s amazing to see how fast it is. If Jolicloud 1.0 was all about the interface and the new HTML5 launcher, Jolicloud 1.1 is about improving the system, the performance and the experience of the product.

Jolicloud is now working on all computers, not only netbooks

Welcome to Jolicloud anywhere. Jolicloud 1.1 is not only a netbook OS anymore, it will just run great on your desktop or your old laptop. My mom recently installed Jolicloud 1.1 on her old Dell desktop and it’s like it was a new machine. It boots faster, play videos out-of-the-box and comes with Chromium and Flash embedded. I recently installed Jolicloud 1.1 on my old Samsung Q1 UMPC tablet. It’s perfect to check Facebook or run Spotify in the kitchen or in the living room.

Everyday we receive testimonials from people all around the world reviving their computers with Jolicloud. If you have recycled a computer with Jolicloud, you should send us a picture, we will publish the best ones online.

Faster boot

A fast and gorgeous 16 million color boot. The boot process has been completely redesigned and takes between 10 to 20 seconds on most devices we have tried. You will love the new introduction animation. No more flickering screens or system messages, it’s just fast and clutter free! Boot is not the only one benefiting from the upgrade: suspend and wake up are faster than ever and both pick-up WiFi right away.

HD video and Flash

If you are the owner of a brand new Intel Atom N550 netbook, you will enjoy flawless support for Full HD 1080p videos, as well as, YouTube videos in HD 720p.

Battery life improvements

We’ve made significant progress in terms of battery management. In fact we think Jolicloud 1.1 will deliver one of the best battery performance out there. Here are the results of a test we did on a Clevo M1100 netbook (Intel Atom N450 processor with a 3-cell battery). We were surfing the web over WiFi.

  • Windows 7: 2h40
  • Jolicloud 1.0: 2h42
  • Jolicloud 1.1: 3h06 (+ 15% vs. 1.0)

For this update, we focused on improving the most requested features by our users. The availability to install Jolicloud anywhere, a better boot, better HD and Flash support, and improved battery support. In the coming weeks, we will provide an early version of Jolicloud 1.1 for beta testers and to gather user feedbacks. We are very excited about Jolicloud 1.1 and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

Happy Joliclouding!

Does it support 2-finger scroll?

    October 7, 2010
    6:08 pm

as long as your touchpad does support multitouch, you should be able to enable the 2-finger scrolling from the control panel, section “Mouse”

I cannot find this option in the Mouse configuration screen. Can you post a screenshot?

multi-touch has been supported since pre-beta on appropriate hardware (like eeepcs).

Amazing, as always!
Well done guys!

Nice, but not really any improvements I was looking for like shortcuts to websites from Chromium on the launcher, changeable desktop background etc.

Did you add the ability to disable the trackpad while typing? That is the only flaw with this awesome system.

This has always been possible to do manually. There are tweaks that make this possible in Ubuntu that should work for Jolicloud.

    October 7, 2010
    7:34 pm

To do this in Jolicloud, bring up the terminal (Alt+f1) and then type in:
    sudo syndaemon -i 3 -d

Where 3 is the number of seconds after typing stops that the trackpad reactivates. You can change this to 2 if you find the delay too long.

    Hope this helps!

Excellent tip Luke! This had been bugging me ever since I started using Jolicloud as my primary OS. I just entered the command line string you suggested in my terminal and it worked like a charm!

Out of curiosity, what are the battery life specs against XP machine?

I noticed that I get about ½ hours more on my XP install compared to jolicloud 1.0 installed on the same netbook.

October 7, 2010
6:35 pm

What kind of changes were made to improve battery life?

    October 25, 2010
    9:15 pm

I’m curious what changes were made as well for battery life efficiency. Cause in general most people seem to get much worse battery life out of Ubuntu than Windows 7 and thats the case with me as well. So I’m wondering what they did to make it better.

October 7, 2010
7:02 pm

Is it based on a newer Ubuntu with newer drivers? There are some key drivers missing in 1.0.

    October 9, 2010
    12:25 am

I got a reply from Jolicloud Team when I was asking about drivers on the wiki. This is what they said:

“The newly announced 1.1 release will be based on Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, so this issue should be solved once you update after the release :)”

Will this version of Jolicloud work on an OLPC XO-1? I knew you guys were working on that and I wanted to make sure if 1.1 will work or not…

Outstanding! I’ve been using Joilcloud 1.0 as my primary OS on my Samsung NC10 for about a month now and it’s been great. I chose the express installation option so that I could still boot Windows XP if necessary.

The only time I ever choose XP over Jolicloud are those occasions when I will be working for an extended period away from my AC adapter. Jolicloud 1.0 depletes the six-cell battey on my NC10 almost twice as fast as XP. I look forward to upgrading to the new more energy efficient Jolicloud 1.1!

Thoroughly agree with you Stephen, although I’ve been using my NC10 with Jolicloud, since January.
Currently Battery life SUCKS, like Vampires…

      October 16, 2010
      1:56 pm

Must be due to screen settings, I have not timed the battery life of XP versus Joli 1.0, but I will now. I do notice the resolution for fonts is much better than XP.

What about adding custom apps to the main page? Will that ever get implemented?

    Zak Kaufman
    October 7, 2010

It’s under consideration for the future :)

    October 13, 2010
    6:43 am

Glad to hear it! Then the “apps” will actually be apps. When if first downloaded Jolicloud I was excited that there was reportedly a whole bunch of apps. I was disappointed to find out that there aren’t really any “apps”. Just launchers to sites and a few local programs. Right now Jolicloud is sort of a glorified bookmarks manager. Custom apps would make my life complete! :D

How’s H.264 and Flash playback on netbooks that use the GMA 500 GPU?

    October 7, 2010
    11:26 pm

I’d like to know this as well.

    October 8, 2010
    3:47 pm

Would be great if it can not just work but be really fast on a gma 500, making full use hardware acceleration.

    October 8, 2010
    5:25 pm

Since they said 1.1 is based on Ubuntu 10.04 then GMA 500 support won’t be that great. Right now, Ubuntu 9.10 has the best GMA 500 support out of all the versions. So unless Jolicloud is making their own drivers then expect worse experience on the GMA 500 with 1.1.

      October 17, 2010
      1:37 pm

is this real? gma 500 performance will be worse with 1.1?

I’m glad to see battery life improvements. My eeepc with XP gets 8 hours but only about 4 with Jolicloud 1.0. Also, I really want that trackpad fix put into place. So many times when I am typing, the mouse jumps. This doesn’t happen with XP.

Click Menu key, To right of AltGr key Go to SYSTEM, PREFERENCES, MOUSE and Right click – choose add to Panel.

Left click the Mouse icon that appeared on the system tray. there’s an option to disable the touchpad (for use when typing – stops cursor wandering as thumbs brush NEAR touchpad)

If Jolicloud is based on Ubuntu 9.04 what will happen when support finishes for this distro around now? Are you changing the repositories to a newer Ubuntu version?
I suggest including iPod/ iPhone support.
Well done for you work to support the Poulsbo chipset. I have been using Jolicloud 1.0 in my AO 751h and it has been faultless.

October 8, 2010
12:00 am

What are the specs on that 1080p playback capability with an N550? High profile? Level 4.1? So you’re saying I can play the the .m2ts files I extract from my Blu-rays if I have an N550 based netbook?

    October 8, 2010
    12:21 am

I call BS on the 1080p video capability since there’s no proof. Show me it playing a Blu-ray. Version 1.0 had problems handling 720p content. I doubt a dual core at a slower clock speed is going to give it 1080p playback. I can see it doing 720p.

I highly doubt these guys created their own H.264 video decoder that’s more efficient than what’s already available on other Linux distros which usually use FFMPEG based players.

      October 10, 2010
      7:38 am

Their 720p claim for version 1.0 was a lie. None of my 720p MKVs played well.

    Try these files:

      October 8, 2010
      3:12 pm

So does 720p or 1080p still not work with MKVs? I never play HD videos in AVI and MOV containers. I’m pretty sure that goes with a lot of people too.

    October 8, 2010
    6:27 pm

Ya, please post a video playing a 1080p Blu-ray or a rip of one in an MKV container or is your 1080p claim similar to Nvidia’s 1080p claim for their Tegra 2 chipset? You know, the chipset that got dumped by Boxee because it can’t play true full HD 1080p but just limited ones.

This is great news! im really looking forward to the update. I only have one request, better looking systemtray icons!
The gui design in Jolicloud is amazing, just love it, but the volume, battery and especially the wifi-icon looks really bad. Hope you can replace them with some other more smooth icons that works better with rest of the nice gui. other than that its all good news for 1.1!

October 20, 2011 i’m awyals loving great stretching advice…most of my problems with running have occured in my feet..oddly enough. I’m pretty sure I have an issue with plantar fascitis in my right foot…as long as I ice my foot with a frozen water bottle and massage my foot with a golf ball, it helps alot. i’ve never tried foam rolling before, but I really need to start I think injuries are prob what tend to scare runners the most…i know thats how I feel anyways…I think the best way to avoid it is just train smartly. Overtraining is so easy to do that its crazy…I’ve struggled with it myself. Its all a learning experience right?I cant stand GUs, they make me gag. I’ve used the “sport” jelly belly beans and they are decent but my all time fave is Cliff shot blocks, they work really well for me and settle down nicely in my stomach. plus they are yummy Theresa recently posted..

Pozdrawiam.

“Intel GMA 500 video card are not fully supported with Jolicloud 1.1 yet, but we are actively working on an update coming very soon.”

Meanwhile, should I install back Jolicloud 1.0 on my Acer Aspireone 751h? Or should I wait (if this waiting isn’t too long)?

Anmerkung/Korrektur.

Review by Budding Buddhist for Rating: I buoght an N150 after Consumers Reports gave it high reviews. A week after I received it, it wouldn’t come back on after Windows updated Windows 7 Starter. I sent it to factory service which replaced the hard drive. When it came back the touch pad didn’t work so I returned it to service. After receiving it from service a second time, the touch pad works but is erratic and jumpy. I tried reducing the sensitivity but, regardless of sensitivity setting, it still is unpredictable. It’s sometimes hard to get the cursor to move, and when it does move, and it comes near a link or button, it tends to stop and open a bidirectional arrow instead of smoothly moving past or to the link. I have been forced to buy an external mouse for it. With the mouse, it works okay. The next problem occurred when I tried to install 2 GB of memory to replace the 1 GB that it came with. The memory door on the underside does not open even after loosening the screw and prying on the door. It feels like the nut that the screw is supposed to screw into is turning without releasing the screw. Samsung service refuses to repair it, claiming that memory door is not covered by the warranty.

Can you post instructions on how to install Jolicloud on the tablet.

Has anyone tried to install it on an Archos tablet, if so, how is that done as well?

I’m a bit confused. It’s clearly shown on this post that Jolicloud is running on a Samsung Q1 in the picture. I have a Samsung Q1 and I was delighted to see such and installed Jolicloud to my Q1 but to my dismay, the Q1 is not calibrated right under jolicloud. The cursor is off on every item on the screen. Worst is that the cursor also can’t reach the top, side and bottom corners, making it difficult to click on items.
Can someone tell me please what they have done to calibrate or tweak the Q1 to work normally with Jolicloud?

Thanks alot for your input and answers.
