With Jolicloud 1.1, let’s reinvent the computing experience for millions

by Jolicloud Team

December 7th, 2010

The future is here. It’s not evenly distributed yet.
William Gibson

Two years ago, we had a crazy idea, reinvent our relationship with computers. The PC revolution is more than 30 years old, and we thought that computers turned into a “screen bureaucracy” that steps between you and the Internet. We started asking ourselves, how can we reinvent the idea of an operating system and ended up asking, do we really need an operating system?

The reason we created Jolicloud is simple: create a useful and smart desktop that knows when to get out of the way. Making things simple doesn’t mean reducing the possibilities, it means focusing on what matters. We thought that if Jolicloud could improve the productivity of anyone on a computer by 5%, it could be a game changer.

The new trend around tablets and phones is to provide beautiful and simpler interfaces, but they are closed and reduce the scope of what you can do. Jolicloud brings this type of interface to “the other half”, people who don’t have the chance to buy these new tools and have to fight with outdated software.

With what we are releasing today, Jolicloud will bring all its users one step ahead of what Google, Apple and Microsoft are announcing. When everybody talks about HTML5 as the future, we deliver it today, now and for everyone. But here is the trick, you should not be forced to buy an expensive device to benefit from these technologies. With Jolicloud, you just need to recycle any computer.

We are on a mission to make quality computing affordable in the world and we are not accepting to play by the traditional rules that made change unavailable for years.

Jolicloud 1.1 Launcher

Today, we are stepping away from “the netbook only OS”. There are about 100 to 300 million computers waiting right now for Jolicloud to reveal their full potential. We hope that you will help bring as many people as possible to Jolicloud and donate computers you don’t need anymore to schools, kids or people that could benefit from using a better interface to the web. Getting everyone online is too important to let those hundreds of millions of computers remain abandoned. The new focus of the OS is about recycling computers.

Users upgrading from Jolicloud 1.0 will enjoy performance improvements and better battery life. You can check our previous posts for the list of improvements and more details about the OS changes.

We also hope that you will enjoy the brand new HTML5 desktop that anyone on Chrome can use online at We have listened to your feedback and added some of the most requested features, more of them are coming soon. Here are the highlights of what’s new:

  • Dashboard customization with beautiful background images
  • Simplified access to the computer settings
  • Ability to add any local app to your desktop from a Jolicloud device
  • Faster sign up and login using Facebook Connect
  • Improved user interface design

With Jolicloud 1.1, we have worked hard to make the best release ever and have partnered with 18 new mirrors, commercial and universities. It will be available on these mirrors and also on BitTorrent. If you are using BitTorrent, we would appreciate if you can seed as long as you can to make the download as fast as possible.

If you are running Jolicloud 1.0, we will start updating users in a few days, but if you can’t wait to try it, the new ISO and Windows installer will be available for download later today. Update: the Jolicloud 1.1 ISO and Windows Installer are now ready for download, and the upgrade from Jolicloud 1.0 to 1.1 is also available!

There are a few exciting days ahead. We are very happy with Jolicloud 1.1 and we want to share the excitement with our users. Thanks for your support, you are awesome.

Happy Joliclouding!

Thank you this ambitious project !
You reinvent the relation between users and OS.
Most of my family members think Ubuntu so Linux is too complicated.
Within you, they taste Linux pleasures with a simple OS.
Very excited to try the new release ;-)
Long live Jolicloud !

Thanks for the effort, guys.

I will try it in hope to get more of the original Ubuntu functionality.

If only you’d stop trying to turn my netbook into an iPhone:(

    December 7, 2010
    4:56 pm

I agree with you about the iPhone compared to the restrictions of the software.
I would be free to install applications outside Jolicloud repositories, and bootable from the dashboard.

For iPhone style, I think it’s really nice for a simple interface and navigation easier for everyone and lightweight system.

      December 7, 2010
      5:13 pm

Outside the Jolicloud repos? What? “Sudo apt-get install whatever-package-you-want-that”. You can also download *.Deb and *.tar.gz packages whenever you want. There is no restrictions on Jolicloud.

That’s true mrhaxx1 … when you know a little bit Linux.
Ok for me, but the final user ?
And I read somewhere on the forum that Jolicloud team advises to not install other apps since apt, for a complete compatibility
And on version 1.0, I can’t launch these apps since the dashboard. I would like it.

      December 7, 2010
      6:57 pm

But i must agree that it would be nice with the Ubuntu Software Center or whatever its called. It should be very easy, since it is already based on Ubuntu.
It’s true that they don’t recommend the apt-get way, but i’ve used it alot for alot of programs, and it always worked flawlessly. Ofc it didn’t get dashboard shortcut, which would be nice. But i accessed it via the menu, so thats no prob.

And the final user? You mean about the apt-get way? My friend learned that way and used it just fine, just after a few hours after first time he used Ubuntu.

      December 7, 2010
      8:02 pm

I totally agree with you. APT is awesome !
I think just, these methods (apt via synaptic or console, launch via the menu) are at the opposite to the simple use that I support, and imagine for my aunts and oncles, parents … a wide audience.

      Thank you for Jolicloud!
I installed Jolicloud 1.1 on my kitchen Joggler yesterday using image given in Joggler info forum. Jolicloud is exactly the right type of OS for my needs. The only thing I’m missing at the moment is a touch control for Chrome, but I believe that can be done as well.

      December 7, 2010
      8:53 pm

Right, you could still access the terminal (ALT+F1) and use the repo you like. It’s just easier for the average user if he got a polished surface, instead of the common struggle by “Userfriendlyness vs. Complexity” many linux-new-ones are afraid of :)

November 6, 2011 at 8:31 amI would like to show aociepiatrpn to you just for bailing me out of this type of challenge. As a result of looking throughout the the net and finding basics which are not powerful, I was thinking my life was over. Being alive devoid of the strategies to the issues you have sorted out by means of your main website is a serious case, as well as the ones that would have in a negative way affected my career if I had not discovered your site. Your natural talent and kindness in playing with a lot of stuff was crucial. I’m not sure what I would have done if I had not come across such a solution like this. I can also at this time look ahead to my future. Thanks for your time very much for your high quality and sensible help. I won’t be reluctant to endorse your web blog to anybody who needs guidance on this area.

Hey Guys, im from Poland and i really enjoy Joliclouding. Its awesome system.
I use it on Nokia Booklet 3G and i have few problems:

- i cannot watch movies, there is a sound of the movie but there is no image at all. I checked this even on VLC – what should i do?

- on Youtube when i want to watch a movie on full screen i just see the white screen. Voice from the movie works but there is no image. I cheked this on Chromium and on Opera. Both are this same.

First problem is pissing me off because when i want to watch something i have to turn on windows and im not a big fan of Windows.

Anyone can help with this.

    8:21 pm

    Hello Chris,

The issues you listed are known issues with Poulsbo devices (in addition to this, hibernate shouldn’t work yet).
Of course, we’re working on it and an update should be available soon.

    Thank you for your support!

      December 7, 2010
      11:59 pm

      Thanks for ur reply Cedric.

      Im looking forward for it.

So if i fully understand Jolicloud doesnt support GMA500 (its a graphics card in Booklet) yet, right?

      December 8, 2010
      2:24 pm

and I will add that VLC has not the GPU acceleration.
Note that all is fixed in the last Ubuntu 10.10 except the flash full screen.
I’m disapointed, because I think that Ubuntu is fastest and have a better support for my GMA 500 actually than this last version of jolicloud :-(

      January 18, 2011
      5:16 pm

I have same issues as Chris with my Nokia booklet. I can watch movies stored in the computer using Sm-player and that works well. I love Jolicloud so far, it has made Nokia faster than working on Win 7. I still have issues with hibernation. I am not impressed with the boot time, it takes 1 min 20 sec to boot jolicloud and Win 7 took 1 min 30 sec. Any comments?

      February 3, 2011
      8:15 am

Not just that Hibernate won’t work, neither does even Suspend, at least on a Nokia Booklet 3G (which FLIES under Jolicloud 1.1 compared to the stock Windows 7 Starter and Professional):
Upon attempting wakeup, the screen’s backlight will come back on (along with the Bluetooth and WiFi/WLAN but not 3G indicator LEDs) at least where the graphical desktop SHOULD BE (but does not re-appear) whereas even the backlight will stay dark when switching to a Ctrl-Alt-F2 text-mode terminal, and in either case nothing will be shown at all.
Hot-plugging HDMI (with its EDID) and hitting the internal/external display hotkey does not trigger a re-initialization of graphics either.

For the record, Netbook Remix (or Edition, as they seem to call it these days) up to 10.10 does not even initialize to the physical 1280*720 screen resolution but suffers from the same freeze-on-suspend flaw.

Tried “every setting known to man” such as (the first of which does not seem applicable to Jolicloud) and in 20-video-quirk-pm-misc.fdi without any “match” qualifiers (recommend any vendor and “system.hardware.product” strings to make a *-nokia.fdi one?).

If there is anything I can try to at least ascertain Suspend can be made work, please let us know shortly.

As a reminder, the simplified access to the computer settings from the dashboard and the ability to add any local app (AIR, Wine…) to your dashboard is only possible with a 1.1 install.

The upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1 hasn’t been released yet, it will be rolled out over the next few days. But the launcher has been changed for everyone, even people still running 1.0 ;)

Hope someday Jolicloud can run apps that run on an iOS device so you have a choice between a high-end Apple device and you own computing device. Innovation and Usefullness… not only that your first but you’re able to sustain productivity.

Hey… I’ve been looking forward to this release for some time now, having used 1.0 for a few weeks on my ASUS 1015PEM with no issues other than not being able to disable trackpad while typing. Unfortunately I can’t get wireless to work on 1.1, and thus cannot complete the install :( … any ideas?

December 8, 2010
6:10 am

Hey, thanks for the update! So far it’s been great! One big issue though concerning the soundcard: whenever I’m playing music or watching a video (youtube or local) the sound will play fine for a few seconds then crack and disappear until I adjust the sound volume again. Then, a few seconds later, same thing. :P

December 8, 2010

Had no problems with 1.0 on my ASUS 1015PEM, except for not being able to disable trackpad while typing.

Now with 1.1 the wireless doesn’t work on the 1015PEM, which means I can’t even complete the install! Any ideas?

Very interesting project, I just might give it a go on my netbook… Do you have to sign into an online Jolicloud account to be able to use the system, or does it also work as a standalone/”offline” desktop?

December 8, 2010
6:17 pm

Next time, please wait before you call it a release. 1.1 was a total regression for my T91.
The touchscreen was wrongly identified and identified twice (registering strange clicks anywhere) – contrary to your announcement,
battery autonomy is not better (30 min. less) – contrary to your announcement, poulsbo-support is near-garbage (2D without video, even lagging behind ubuntu) – contrary to your announcement,
the slim login manager is not faster than GDM – a) lots of users will have a hard time to find the autologin option (what nearly everybody here will want, since a netbook is not a workstation), b) gdm would precharge the session, while slim simply waits
suspend takes considerably more time (waking up is alright)
thunderbird has huge problems to start (what did you do to it? still mixing essential libraries from different distributions?)

Seriously, if I didn’t hope that you could still make video and Skype with a webcam work on this PC, I’d change. Did you even know that you were probably more famous for poulsbo-support than for your launcher?

Please, please, please, just don’t call it a release next time. And if you have to publish a pre-release earlier officially (because, for example, you have published a netbook whose buyers will be gruntled if they don’t get the Jolicloud 1.1 they thought they had bought), then please make a release note where you say what does work and what doesn’t.
This was (and some of it still is) a complete mess and I would have preferred not to upgrade at all.

    December 8, 2010
    9:45 pm

Language support is broken as well – due to repository mixing again and resulting broken dependencies.

I have been testing Jolicloud for a bit on two laptops. I have the same issue with skype on my Acer Aspire One.The other laptop I have no issues with skype.
You can test the internal mic by going to Local Apps >> Sound Recorder. If it works there then this is what might work for you using skype. In the notification area in the upper right click the volume control and then open sound preferences. Go to the output tab and move the balance all the way to the left or right. Close and the try skype again to see if it works.

Coincidentally I used to work for Juniper up till 4 years ago and used 64 bit Linux back then too, plus this stioulon for corporate intranet access. At that time there was also a Java applet based version that did port forwarding. For example you could configure it so that port 1234 on localhost was forwarded to an ip address and port number of your choosing on the corporate network. Not as seamless as a proper VPN client, but it did work. In my case it also gave me far better control over name restioulon and which connections went straight out over the internet vs via the the corporate network. An alternate interim stioulon may be using ssh. You can setup a VPN using recent ssh versions, and not as port forwarding but rather actual network interfaces on both ends.

I liked the straightfoward simplicity inherent in v1, so tried the beta1.1. Sorry guys, but I feel there’s still quite a way to go. There’s still no official & reliable way to create a persistent pendrive install which saves changes. Although we can now create our own desktop layout ( a facility several lightweight distros have had for years) it seems we are still stuck with the ‘teenager dramatic black’ windows and menus.. I’m glad to see you’re moving away from the netbook only system. A good idea; nobody wants it as general net coverage isn’t up to it yet. As we know, Google’s Chronos OS hhasn’t exactly taken the world by storm. On the positive side, it is quite a fast system and would no doubt be a lot more efficient when fully installed. The trouble is; I’ve been spoilt by small distros which can be run at their full speed in live mode, and will fit on a standard 700Mb CD. I appreciate that a lot of hard work is going into jollicloud, wireless operation on an Acer laptop is flawless, and will be checking back regularly.

Jolicloud 1.1…

The Jolicloud 1.1 Cloud OS is now available. Jolicloud is based on an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS backend with an custom developed Chromium HTML5 user interface. The new release is no longer targeting Netbooks only, the developers claim it’s usable with any kind…

First sorry for my English because I translated with google translator.
My congratulations Jolicloud 1.1, the improvement compared to version 1.0 is remarkable.
I have a sony vaio P11 and overall performance has improved significantly over linux mint 9 which was installed by reason of the support for the GMA 500 graphics, which while not total, is better than linux mint 9.
However I guess I have a problem and will know.
The web cam does not work.
The suspension system is not functioning
Center software I installed Ubuntu via terminal and does not work.
When trying to install the language packs to complete Spanish language tells me that there are broken packages.
The screen turns white when I try to watch videos in full screen.
Even with these minor problems improvements in sony vaio P11 are very large compared to linux mint 9. As I can solve these problems??
Good work, continue.
Thank you very much

I have the same problems on Aspire One 751h (with GMA 500 too) :
    - no webcam
    - pacquages broken when I want to install languages packages (french)
    - app installed with synaptics don’t works (Gcompris)
    - Suspend don’t work
But I still think jolicloud 1.1 is the best OS for my netbook, and it’s the only one on it.

Back and up and running on 1.1. It is a lot better, but I still find that there are some problems. Chrome has some issues, and when the whole system is reliant on Chrome, then the whole system will have some issues.
I still find that there are, for some weird reason, problems with pages that have certain content. Chrome just gobbles up and asks me to kill the page of wait. This was a re-occuring issue during 1.0 (also that flash simply uninstalled itself and wouldnt work when you manually set it up). I hoped 1.1 would solve this. There is no logic as x amounts of reinstalls will eventually solve it (for a while) until Chrome fucks up again. Even on a clean install. Any one else have this issue?
Keep up the work!

How in the hell do I get support for Jolicloud? I can’t set up Google Sync in the Chromium web browser. After I enter my username and password and click “Sign In” all I get is a spinning circle next to the “Sign In” button and nothing happens. Is this some sort of joke? What good is a cloud operating system when I can’t even sync my Google Chrome settings with Jolicould’s web browser? This problem does NOT occur with the Google Chrome web browser under Windows 7.

One comment about the website: could you put the

Have been using for two days now on my Asus 1001P. Battery life is significantly less than with Windows 7 starter, which claims about 6 hours with the Hybrid Engine.

Can’t seem to get PowerTop installed for CPU management, this was supposed to be easy. Also my screen brightness is too dark at max setting and two finger scrolling not working.

Setup did not have a driver set specifically for the Asus 1001P netbook, what’s up with that?

samething im going threw with the battery life. i have win 7/ jolicloud dual boot and battery life is absolutely horrible compared to win 7. i think the battery life would be better if i could hibernate or sleep, but my ACER 521 does not come out of either- just black screen. also, it seems like my netbook is running harder then win 7 while idling. these are very significant problems.

Only thing so far that is an annoyance is the inability to add custom launchers to the homescreen. Even if it isn’t user friendly there should be a way to do so. I mean I can not even add a “shortcut” to a web app that you haven’t added to the app list yet. That should be simple but instead its impossible.

As for local apps. Find a way to let us add them. Make web apps the default but sometimes there simply isn’t an option. relegating all the local apps to 3-4 clicks from the homescreen to open them is just a bit TOO hard for regular use.

I know I can add quicklinks to the top bar but that doesn’t really fit the aesthetic.

because all applications on the HTML5 launcher are greyed out without internet. if you lose internet connection while your laptop is on, all apps will become grey. you can use the apps via the drop down menu (im new to linux, not sure the exact name for it, the shortcut for it is the kb button in between alt/ctrl on the right side)

    December 12, 2010

im not sure you will be able to if you havent gotten the update/sync prompts already. the reason i say this is because their were syncing problems with version 1.0. i was unable to receive any sync update when i used version 1.0, but when i started using the 1.1 preview build, all sync updates came threw correctly. it automatically updated my preview build to the final build via sync updates as soon as 1.1 final was available.

Jolicloud sucks ass. Seriously people Windows 7 has it all and you do anything on it that you want! Jolicloud is a waste of time and uses more resources on my computer than Windows 7 causing my fan to always be on. Why try to reinvent what always works perfectly? Windows ALL THE WAY!

i wouldnt go as far as to say it sucks because windows 7 is so good. but there are big flaws with jolicloud and its not perfect- battery life issues/ acpi issues/ heating issues- but most if not all of that stems from ubuntu having flaws that havent been fixed.

I got to know Jolicloud last week and installed the 1.1 in my netbook and wow I’m so happy. I had Windows XP before in my netbook and I hate it that I have to pay for a lot of additional software and it is also slow.

So I decided to search in Google: “The best operating system for netbook” And voila, Jolicloud was listed in a website as NO.1 and I straightaway looked it up and so happy to be able to install it quickly. You guys are so smart, All of my devices are recognised straight away so I don’t have to worry about looking for CDs, drivers, etc etc etc. Jolicloud does it for me!!! I plugged in my printer and Jolicloud recognised my printer straight away and even chose the correct printer model for me!! wow!

I’m also very happy to be able to find so many free software, especially for desktop publishing, graphic design, animation, and now I even got interested to try to learn Linux and programming because of Jolicloud. I love using Terminal and downloading software and fonts from it.. very quick!!! I am so happy to say good bye to Windows!!!

Thanks a lot guys! I am proud to be a part of Jolicloud community!
