Welcome to the new Jolicloud!

by Jolicloud Team

March 9th, 2011

Following up on our previous blog posts on the new direction for Jolicloud and the Joli OS 1.2 feature list, we’d like to share with you some of the features that are available in the new Jolicloud desktop and Joli OS 1.2. Both of which are now available.

The fastest way to try the Jolicloud desktop is to install the Jolicloud Chrome App now!

A Whole New Design

We enhanced the design and fine tuned the user interface. Features like app sharing (the little star) can now be found more easily. We have included lots of cool new wallpapers like the one below.

The New Launcher

Create Your Own Apps

Now you can easily create your own apps in seconds! Just type in the URL of your favorite site and Jolicloud will add it as an app to your Launcher. You can even share your creations with friends.

Instant App Creation Wizard

Seamless Dropbox Integration

Link your Dropbox account to your Jolicloud, access to your files from any instance of your Jolicloud desktop (including the one of your Joli OS device). We will include other cloud services soon, so stay tuned!

Dropbox Integrated In Jolicloud

Jolicloud Public Page

All Jolicloud users have a public page to share web apps and services with friends and colleagues. Any apps you star will be on your public page. Of course if you don’t want one, it’s easy to disable it in your settings.

If you are a Joli OS user, you’ll get a special Recycler badge added to your profile.

Don’t forget try out the new Jolicloud Chrome App and let us know what you think!

Great job on continuing to innovate this netbook/cloud-friendly OS. The new version is quite an achievement!

I strongly recommend looking at Wuala.com for cloud storage. They are the only one I know of with secure, encrypted storage, plus they work on Linux, Mac, and Win!

keep up the great work

Will Joli OS install over my existing JC, or will this require a rebuild? I have a low-power ASUS netbook that I GLADLY removed Win XP from and have been thrilled with JC, runs like a high-power laptop with JC.

Installed the Joli OS on an old HP Pavillion desktop and it was definitely more responsive than it was using Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat. I would definitely like to see SugarSync added as one of the cloud sync options.

Clicking on the ‘click here to update your system’ message on my launcher just brings me to my updates page, but when I click ‘check for updates’ it just tells me that ‘your system is synchronized’. Do I have to uninstall Jolicloud 1.1 and reinstall 1.2?

Joli OS is fine but why not enable local apps only (VLC, excell viewer ..) when you’ve no connexion. It whould be very useful to share video and pictures with friends and family in a place with no connection (train, resto, sport hall, your grandmother house ….)

It seems to be a common problem… some people have been remarking about it on Twitter. In my case it would probably be a faster option to simply download the newest version, although that would entail uploading all of my files to dropbox so that I don’t lose them… a bit of an inconvenience…

The same here. Dell mini 1010 hangs also on loading screen after upgrade. 1.1 worked fine. If I press F1 it shows:

I have the same problem on my mother’s Dell mini 10. The update failed and it goes into a loop when restarted with the error saying “1507 killed TERM signal 1″

Please tell me we don’t have to do a fresh install AGAIN after an update.

My mother loves this OS but after 2 failed major updates that left her with an unusable computer she is starting to regret using Linux and I am starting to regret recommending Jolicloud. Please help us.

      March 21, 2011
      4:51 am

I ended up with the same story on my Mini 1010, I managed to use the terminal to mount a USB drive and copy my files from my Documents and Download folders, but then the rest was a total loss.

After the fresh install I didn’t like the way the file system folders open up performance wise and the functionality seemed reduced. Also it STILL doesn’t play movies yet out of the box.

I switched over to Ubuntu 10.10 netbook release, but running the Desktop mode as the Unity interface fails on it with the 1010. BUT. I can use my TV Tuner as well as play movies with a small tweak. Anyone with a Dell Mini 1010 might want to give that a spin until JoliOS sorts out the issues with those netbooks. I’m still hoping they figure it out!

Hi, upgraded to 1.2 and everything seemed to be working fine. However, I’m now unable to access local apps (Chromium, Writer, Calibre, Transmission etc. are all greyed out) and I also don’t seem to be able to access the file manager. I think I know what you mean… It’s as if the OS thinks I’m using the HTML5 Desktop instead of the integrated one. How can this be resolved. I have a ton of data I have no way to access. Very Frustrating… If I can’t access it I can’t back it up to revert.

While I see some improvements, the new file browser seems poorly implemented.

I was trying to go through a heavily-populated folder (music) in my Windows directory, and the file browser crashed three times. Clicking a music file does nothing for ten seconds until finally opening a preview.

Unfortunately, I would prefer to just be able to right-click and get a menu with the “preview-open-open in folder” options, as I’m finding the current set up to be counterintuitive. And why can’t defaults be set? It would be nice to be able to click a mp3 file in the file browser and have it launch banshee by default, but I don’t see how this can be done.

Currently, I have to click the file, wait for the preview to open, and then click open again to actually open the file. The problem here is that with music files, Banshee opens in 1/4 the time the preview does. Why bother previewing?

Other than that, it looks a bit nicer. The lack of real settings is a little disappointing, and I get zero graphics options, even though I’m running this on a desktop which is well-equipped. It’s painful to minimize an app and see that shaky black box fly into the corner as opposed to a ghostly minimizing effect.

The most perplexing thing to me is why I’m limited to two rows of apps per page when there is space for a full third. It would make sense if the space allowed for a mouse gesture which let you switch pages (e.g. clicking and dragging right to left would move to the next page).

    Cédric Duclos
    March 11, 2011

Don’t click the link but the line and the open it!

Regarding the “limitations”, don’t forget you’re able to have access to your files from anywhere, even just from a modern broswer and that’s awesome ;)

i can see what he means though. being a big android user as i am i would love to see swipe gestures incorporated. it would make it all feel really swish.

my 1 major headache with this otherwise great bit of kit. is the network intergration. i have 5tb of storage in my network and no way to access it through normal means. if i click on the vlc link and then try to open a file the “network” tab is not there. and as there is no way to add network folders to the home screen everything is difficult to access…

I think the file browser is cool in general, but it’s a little bit weird that you can’t do things like “move” or “delete” using the new file browser–especially w/ the dropbox now “a part of the system” it’s hard to navigate and make changes to the embedded folders w/in my dropbox. That’s one feature I’d really like to get in there somehow! I like what you are doing though– thanks!!!

    Cédric Duclos
    March 11, 2011

    It’s a file browser to… Browse files ;)
In Joli OS, the Dropbox client and Nautilus are still there for the other operations.

    William Idsardi
    March 15, 2011
    3:32 am

I agree with Nat here. I get it, now, that it’s a file BROWSER and not a file MANAGER, but that’s pretty unexpected given that there’s no “Native App” or “Add On” for a file manager. It’s true that launching “Local Apps” and then “More Apps” brings up Nautilus (or that I can run Nautilus with Alt-F2) but that’s not going to very obvious to someone new. I guess we can handle folder creation in the “Save File …” dialog box (and maybe that’s where people mostly do that now) but I still think there should be a “File Manager” app (even if it just launches Nautilus in your home directory).

He’s wanting to remove the user-created app completely. I’ve wondered this as well, but it really wasn’t until I realized that when you create the custom web app you’re making it available to everybody who uses Jolicloud. It’s now on the “cloud”. It’s no longer just your web app. So with that said I can understand why you might not offer a way to remove it, but then again if I created it should I not be able to remove it? This issue needs fixing because you’re going to have a major problem where there are multiple versions of the same web app & no way to remove the unnecessary ones. I’ve got 2 versions of the same app right now because I didn’t know I could change the icon after the fact & decided to create another one with a better icon. Now I can’t remove the duplicate.

IT looks great, but I can’t use it, because i can’t copy/move/delete files over the integrated file browser. There is also no way to delete files in my dropbox. (No Link, no button, nothing…) I can only read files in my dropbox and the native dropbox clinet doesn’t work.

Waiting for JoliOS 1.3 :-(

    ???
The dropbox file view is just to VIEW.

If you want to add/delete/modify dropbox files, do it in the normal filebrowser “Nautilis”… It works for me so must be something wrong with your config?

I’m sure this info is available elsewhere, but at least while Joli OS is built on top of Ubuntu you can access the Ubuntu repositories and install whatever you like. The magic to do this is “Alt-F2 gksudo synaptic” which will bring up the synaptic package manager. Then you can search for “firefox” and install it. If you’re familiar with Ubuntu (or Debian) this will be easy enough, but if you haven’t used synaptic before, be careful you can bork your system with it. Once firefox is installed you can launch it with “Alt-F2 firefox”. Same for the rest of the web browsers (Opera, Midori, etc.).

      Hi Zak!
Tried it many times. I think this is even a worse issue with my attempt to update to 1.2.
Looks like all my docs are gone unfortunately, I would like to be able to perform the update again since Chromium isn’t opening and other apps are shaded/dimmed – thus indicating that they can’t be run.
I have no clue what’s going on, the fan of my Eee 1001HA is running full speed as well, no stopping or spinning down.
The Jolicloud update to Joli OS experience for me was a total disaster. Lost many documents and actually I lost the feel of being in control of the laptop. :-( I’m very disappointed by this release so far. No indication of that the OS is attempting to download updates or any signs of activity whatsoever.
I’ll try to do a fresh install to see whether I’ll be able to recover my old documents and if the fresh install will allow me to install OS 1.2 in parallel to the 1.1.

A solution to the Flash Problem is Found.

Download the install_flash_player_10_linux.tar.gz, from adobe.

Then Extract File, I found that Jolicloud will not let me extract and overwrite the file in

/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so

Once Extracted open a terminal.
Alt-F1 and then change to root superuser Sudo -S

Then goto
/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so
and remove libflashplayer.so

rm libflashplayer.so

Then copy the extracted libflashplayer.so to
/usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so

example
“cp /home/mistafied/Downloads/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so”

Close Chrome and Restart. Now Chrome did a second restart, and it looked like the Jolicloud Dashboard updated or something, but when a ran Chrome again. The Out of date message is Gone.

Well it did not have all of that there yesterday. And I will agree it was due to an early reboot, but not by my doing.

During the upgrade session, the wifi dropped out on it’s own, and the computer did some wacky stuff.

Then when it was rebooted, I had questioned my stuff if the whole upgrade went through.

All in all, I figured it out myself, trying a few things, and here is just another solution for people instead of having to search around for it.

I would also like to point out that now Transmission Bittorrent is not working as well.

See as well notice that the Hardware Accelerater problem is only on certain types of videos and the windowed settings.

I could not disable the Hardware accel, on normal linked videos, the settings option was grayed out.

But when I go to full screen videos, then I can disable it. But as well, the videos are not all red at fullscreen, nor if I watch a video that is linked to a Google news article.

Maybe a problem with the Youtube Player Code.

Seems to me that there is some bugs with the new flash player and Chrome, more than anything.

Don’t get me wrong the update is outstanding, but the guest mode is a little disappointing. As a guest who is not using Joli OS or Jolicloud I don’t want to sign in somewhere. A guest should be able to choose:

Well I get the point – for sure it’s kinda good advertisment & ok you connected with facebook so they’d be able to login easily -
      - I thought of a special case where there’s a party and you want to have a guest account so that no one is using your id. (but maybe that’s kinda rare)
      - on the other hand how much information does Jolicloud store? Does it even save the history of our visited websites? Cloud-System is nice for sure but the user is quite transparent.

      March 14, 2011
      4:18 am

Dustin: Your special case is valid & Guest Mode works for that. They just have to either use a Facebook account or create a Jolicloud account & boom they’re on the web. Also, in Guest mode it does not keep track of their history as the browser runs in Incognito mode. However, all files & settings are deleted once they shutdown anyway. Check this for more details on Guest Mode:

      DustinBoettcher

Ah I see. I always thought there is some kind of connection between the login and the things your’re doing on the system (e.g. browser history – to analyse and sell the data). Like BigJoli is watchin you or somethin like that ;P

But it seems that the account is simply there to sync all the apps & the dropbox, well in that case it’s kinda cool. Sry for my paranoia, but this whole cloud thing kinda scares me. Nevertheless JoliOS is just awesome.

Thx for the answer. I really appreciate it.

My upgrade went without a hitch, fortunately =)

I have two recommendations for the Jolicloud team for future upgrades:

1)Make some kind of prompt appear to let people know that they should be “plugged in” instead of simply on a battery for laptop/netbook upgrades. I knew from experience the horrors that can follow upgrading while on battery-power, so I knew to do this in advance. Others might not be so lucky, and that could have caused some of these problems above.

2) A little more transparency of what is going on during the upgrade process would be nice. The way the progress bar fills is inadequate–since its seemingly showing the upgrade of each component, it is impossible to tell if the upgrade is actually “done”. Having a small window where you can see (SEE, not interact, just SEE) synaptic (I’m assuming its synaptic doing this, yes?) making the changes would be a HUGE boon.

I say this because I had no real idea if the upgrade was still running or it was finished while the upgrade was occurring. I think the NetworkManager got updated and it kicked off my wireless, which removed the “syncing” bar, so I wasn’t sure if I needed to restart or what…turns out I made the right choice by just walking away and letting it run awhile longer (even though it appeared to not be doing something, it actually was upgrading still).

So, yeah
1) Warning prompt to plug into wall outlet during upgrade
2) Transparent upgrade, so you can tell what is being changed when it is being changed. LMDE does this nicely–it just opens a non-interactable terminal window that shows what is going on.

I just did a fresh install of 1.2 (wiped my drive — no dual boot). My desktop won’t sync.

All of my apps show up but they are dimmed. It says “Sync Ready,” and when I press Start a progress bar comes up, but when it finishes it still says “Sync Ready” with the same number of apps available.

Any suggestion?

After re-reading this post, it is rather confusing that you release Jolicloud Desktop and Joli O.S. Why don’t we just simplify thing like when you release Jolicloud 1.1. ? It would be simpler and better if you just announce ‘we release Joli O.S.’ instead of ‘Jolicloud Desktop and Joli O.S.’

As almost everyday I see people keep having problem upgrading to 1.2, I hope in the future Jolicloud team will include option/support to downgrade to the previous release. So, when you release 1.3, there should be an option to ‘Undo’ or ‘Rollback’ or ‘downgrade’ to version 1.2. If you can do this for people who want to downgrade from 1.2 to 1.1, that would be very helpful.

I’m still using 1.1.

Install Battery applet/indicator for the GNOME.

Download it from this website: https://github.com/ia/battery-status

Click the ‘Downloads’ button on the right. A little window appears. Choose the tar.gz file.

Once downloaded, extract it. Go to your downloads folder, the file should be there and right click and click “extract here”. It will be extracted in a folder. Make a note of the location. Mine was extracted here:
    /home/my-jolicloud-username/Downloads/ia-battery-status-ba0a3ee

    How to install it:

    1. Open Terminal as ROOT: First, open terminal, ALT + F1

Type in this code: gksu /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator

It will ask your jolicloud password. Type it in, press ENTER.

    2. Root Terminal is opened.

    3. Type in this code in root terminal:

    cd /home/your-jolicloud-username/Downloads/ia-battery-status-ba0a3ee

Note: replace the directory with the appropriate location of where you extracted the downloaded file above.

    4. Type in this code:

    python setup.py install

    Pres ENTER

It should start installing your battery applet for gnome.

If your installation succeeds, you will see battery applet in your ‘add to panel’ applets list.

Right-click the gnome-panel (top bar) somewhere until you get the ‘add to panel’ option. Add the Battery applet / indicator you’ve just installed.

You don’t need to install your downloaded Firefox 4 package. The executable is already there.

My downloaded firefox was downloaded in this folder:
    /home/myjoliusername/Downloads

    I extracted the firefox4 tar.bz2 here:
    /home/myjoliusername/Downloads/firefox

in that folder, double click the file called ‘firefox’ . Firefox 4 should run.

You can create shortcut for this firefox with command:
    /home/yourJoliusername/Downloads/firefox/firefox %u

just replace the directory with the appropriate location where you extracted the tar.bz2

Jolicloud 1.2 standalone install.
NEC Model 3500A CD DVD R/RW drive will not work in (into NTFS after Windows XP partition was removed).
160 GB HDD.
Same problem with Lite-on DVD player as well.
Is this a driver issue?
DVD drive will not open unless eject button pressed several times, and then closes rapidly. If disk installed, it is read then drive ceases to read. Open the DVD with any of the apps for DVD player and the title registers, then the drive shuts down.
Any ideas?

So, now I’ve decided to get Ubuntu instead. But how do I create a USB drive with Ubuntu while running Jolicloud? I’m supposed to use the Startup Disk Creator program – if I was running Ubuntu, but I’m not. And I do not have access to a Windows or Mac computer.

Please help! Thanks. :)

This OS took a little work to get loaded on my Archos 9 tablet (given to me).

I was very frustrated with the speed of this tablet. It was running “Windows 7 starter edition”, I first tried upgrading to “Windows 7 Home Premium”, then after that disappointment; I formatted the tablet and installed a clean copy of “Windows 7 Home Premium” to see if there may be anything in the stock build that may be slowing the tablet down, and still this tablet ran horribly slow, and was very frustrating to use.

After all that tinkering I discovered Jolicloud. I removed Windows 7 completely, and decided to give Jolicloud 1.2 a test drive on the “Archos 9″. I finally have a pretty nice tablet, Jolicloud 1.2 is working flawlessly (I am using “cellwriter” for onscreen keyboard). I had some doubts on bluetooth functionality, but I had no problems getting a bluetooth keyboard with integrated mouse working. The touch screen application “eGalaxTouch” is what I used to calibrate the screen for touch capabilities.

So, during my evaluation of the OS, in comparison to running Windows 7, Jolicloud wins!

I have been running Jolicloud 1.2 for about a month now, and I have been waiting to write this to make sure I continued to have no problems, and guess what? No problems, or OS locks ups, and I have been using it for a variety of uses, on a daily basis.

Great OS, … Thanks :)

I just installed Joli 1.2 onto my father’s Dell Mini 10v, when his XP simply refused to fully boot-up. So far it’s been great, except for 3 problems:

1. the first time I booted the Dell after installation, the Grub boot menu appeared, and I could choose between Joli or XP (I kept it but reduced its partition considerably). However, since that first bootup, the boot menu has completely disappeared, and turning the machine on leads to an automatic bootup of Joli. In my case, that’s ok, since I’m not likely to choose XP, but others with both OSes working would still like that choice, which would seem to have been taken away from them.

2. the “update” button does nothing more than “sync” my Jolicloud devices (and I only have one!), rather than initiate an update of programs. So it’ll tell me the Dell is sync-ed at the end of the exercise, but the updatable programs are not actually updated. When I rebooted the machine, the same old programs were listed as having updates. I tried the update button a few times to no avail, and finally had to update the programs manually using Synaptic.

3. is there something wrong with the Jolicloud repositories? When I used Synaptic to update the programs stated to have updates, I had no problems with those from the Ubuntu and other non-Jolicloud repositories. However, the updates for the nickel-browser family of programs (from your own repositories) all could not be updated because there was something wrong with the said repositories. Did their location change?

Ok, I’ve seen other people posting the same problem that I’m facing. I tried installing Joli OS 1.2 within windows. After it asked me to restart it got stuck on the ‘Continuing Boot Process’ screen for a long time. I eventually got bored, and restarted it. It still didn’t work. What might the problem be?

I’m running a Dell XPS 15
Windows 7 Home Premium 64x
Intel core i5-M460 @ 2.53 GHz
4GB RAM
And I’ve got ample free diskspace.

Hey i liked Jolicloud interface and tried to install it in my old laptop. i found it has low ram (189mb +64mb graphic shared) than required. generally 6 years old laptop comes with 256mb ram. instead of going for ten + years old computer if 256ram will be supported in recent update will bring life into many old system. i am waiting to see for such improvement.

So obviously the dashboard has a LOT of work to be done to. Personally, I think that the dashboard for Joli OS should be more customizable. Allowing you to add your own links to it, just like a desktop. Looks like until that day comes, either I hack the dashboard or put up with the menu key. Bleh.

I could not understand this fu*k that whats wrong with linux based distribution developers, If you think that a working internet connection is required only to make os work, why dont they put all network cofiguration options on the welcome screen, some of them will give you option to adjust proxy but not the network, some of them with network setting but no proxy configuration option, isnt it better that first work on a simple thing that provide the user with a simple interface at welcome screen to configure network, so that rest of the shit he can access. Thanks

The 1.2 really doesn’t want to work with my Aspire One ZG5 netbook. It’s incredibly slow and freezes for several seconds at a time. I don’t know if it’s trying to download some updates, but I (tried to) use it all afternoon yesterday. It’s really a pain. Unless there is a solution, I’ll change the OS back to Linpus. I suppose it’s probably a resources problem, but you do claim that Jolicloud works even with elderly computers. Maybe you should list the minimum specification on your site.
