Access your Google Docs from the Jolicloud Desktop!

by Jolicloud Team

March 28th, 2011

Following the Dropbox integration, we have integrated Google Docs so you can access and edit documents directly from the Jolicloud File Browser.

The feature is available now. If you don’t see it, just refresh your Jolicloud Desktop.

How to setup Google Docs

Just go to the File Browser and click “Google Docs” in the left sidebar. Then click “Link to my Google Docs” and on the next screen, log into Google and grant Jolicloud access to Google Docs.

Link your Google Docs account to your Jolicloud page

Browse and edit your documents

Access your Google Docs in the File Browser

Your Google Docs will appear in your File Browser. You can also browse not only documents, but also all the files uploaded to your Google Docs. To instantly preview any document, just click the file name or the Preview button.

Preview documents quickly in Jolicloud

You can quickly view and edit files within Jolicloud.

Edit documents quickly in Jolicloud

As with the Dropbox integration this connection is persistent. So now anytime you log into your Jolicloud either via a browser or Joli OS, your Google Docs and Dropbox files will appear automatically inside your desktop.

We have lots of services in mind for future releases but we would love to hear your ideas too.

We want Jolicloud to become your new homepage, the place where you can conveniently access and organize all the things your care about in the cloud!

If you are using Chrome, install our Chrome App or set as your browser’s homepage on Firefox 4 and Safari 5.

Happy Joliclouding!

This is great, I use Gdocs all the time so having it built into JoliOS makes it all the more convenient. Maybe having other document functions built in like a print button which would load up a native printer client would be handy.

Other services I’d love to see included would be Picasa, so I can access and upload all my photos and Sugarsync which will give me access to my business files.

Great work

I am a student and I am throughly pleased with my Jolicloud. I have almost completely replaced my Windows.
The integration of Google Docs was a bonus.

I would like to give a suggestion for the developers. I would like to use the “backspace” button in chrome browser inside Jolicloud and also in the OS itself to navigate to previously sees pages. As of now, it is not usable.

Also over time, I have installed LOTS of apps. Though there is a option of organsing them by dragging along, dragging them across multiple screens is a bit of a hassle. If there is a way of personally categorizing them eg:favorites1 , favorites2 etc, it would be very useful I guess. I think this is very essential as over time more and more users will have more than 100 or more apps.

Thanks a lot to Jolicloud team

Great new feature.

One complaint is that if you still have native files, you cant access them directly from within Joli OS when you have no connection. The filebrowser goes gray when there is no connection.

I can understand that all google documents can’t be accessed, but all files I have on my netbook, I should be able to access without trouble. Now I have use a go around and open the filebrowser though some program and then I can get to those native files.

Just something to think about.

As for now, each update so far is awesome!

Great add-on!
1 question and 2 suggestions:
is the dropbox link accessing online files or the synchronized files on the hard drive?
One suggestion goes to add files to the jolicloud desktop.
Other suggestion goes to to add “backspace” functionality to the web apps. Sometimes is completely impossible to get back to the app main page (unless of course we use mouse right button but that is not very intuitive).

Keep the good (joli)job!

The Dropbox integration shows you what’s stored in the cloud, therefor it also works when you go to use the Chrome app or go to on Firefox 4 or Safari 5 ;)

I’m not sure to understand your issue with the “app main page”.

      March 30, 2011
      10:30 am

      Thanks for the reply.
I will give you a concrete example to make it clear:
I have entered facebook through the web app and I have made the integration to the twitter account. When I do that, the facebook page will be redirected to the twitter account webpage.
My point is: I have entered facebook web app, the icon on top of screen says I am on facebook, but I am inside twitter webpage with no (fast and intuitive) way to go back to the facebook account.
I believe same happens to other examples and applications. Hope that’s more clear now.
Anyway, perhaps I am missing something here (I am a rookie jolicloud user)

The link above is the CORRECT solution for fixing flash if you upgraded from 1.1 to 1.2.
I would totally ignore the fixes the Joli peeps have supplied.

All it is, is that the file that is the Flash file – – needs to live in a different place to a normal Ubuntu install.

You need to use the terminal to fix it.

Basically -

1. Download the tar.gz file when you are at the Adobe flash page after you find out you haven’t got flash when you try to watch a youtube video or something.

2. Extract it.

3. Navigate to the folder where you extracted it too.

4. Open a TERMINAL right there.

5. Press ls to check you are in right place.

6. We’re looking for one file –

7. then you need one command to fix your flash.

sudo cp /usr/lib/nickel-browser/plugins/

8. that is all on one line in case you’re wondering

9. restart your browser or whatever

10. fixio!!!

    April 12, 2011
    9:16 am

Our fix ( seems cleaner because with your suggested fix, users won’t get the new Flash upgrades anymore.
They will be stuck with the current Flash package and will need to manually copy the .so file each time Adobe releases a new version.

Well, Cédric, your method didn’t work for me – even with a fresh install of 1.2. This was both in my Acer One netbook and my VirtualBox VM in my Windows 7 Ult. So there seems to be a little somebug here.
      Steve R’s guidance fixed it.
By the way, Jolicloud OS (other than the above) is great and I will be putting it in many netbooks and old computers around town.

Is there plans to make Joli OS usb portable? I ask this because I stumbled upon Prayaya V3. I tried this program out after learning about MojoPac and I have to say that it is very. I think that it is faster and you can do a lot more with it, especially because it is not limited to just Windows XP. It can run on XP/Vista/7 flawlessly. Because I travel a lot, I am constantly on the go and because pretty much every place that I’ve been uses Windows, I am always concerned about security, especially because I usually cant restart public computers and boot my own Linux distro. With Prayaya, this eliminates most of the problems. Not only is it secure, its super easy.

Check it out at and let me know what you think. I would love to see Joli OS come up with something like this for on the go.

Your Joli OS installed fast and easy on our old Dell D400 laptop. Much faster to use and gives a much more reliable WLAN connection than Windows XP does. My wife has one major problem – no BACK button or backspace key support in Jolicloud apps. It makes Ebay or Amazon or even Gmail very frustrating to use as an app rather than in the browser. It really is a showstopper since Windows XP/Internet Explorer does not do this. Is there any option or plan to solve this or support simple desktop browser shortcuts? Thanks for the great OS.

It’s kind of hard to tell. You haven’t made a blog post in three months. There have been no significant updates, or even news of impending updates. And, worse of all, many native apps remain outdated.

Sure, you can manually install, but there is no official support. Yet this is supposed to be an “everyone” OS–why use it over something like linux mint, which is constantly updated and has a vibrant communication platform set in place between the developers and users?

So, tell me, how exactly is this OS not dead?

      June 29, 2011
      5:05 pm

I totaly agree with Frank Roberts, JoliCloud should be based on debian Mint distro, like the last XFCE Roll (april 2011). This way JoliOS users should be updated – I for exemple need now to compile some softwares I use (like lyx 2.0) because they arn’t in the Ubuntu 10.04 out of dated repositories…

It is not possible to have more than two rows, it is unfortunately limited to 12 launchers a page. This is because while it can revive old systems its primary audience with updated hardware is netbooks. Why they did not give it a dynamic dash (a dash that changes size and number of icons based on the detected size of the monitor/ screen) I don’t know. But we can only hope that it comes out in the next stable release.

These options are OK but they are two, honestly mediocre services. I would far prefer Sugarsync to the Google Docs, or Dropbox. The UI is much nicer and you get 5gb instead of 1-2gb. Also you can get more space for free by doing simple things like posting a public link, or downloading their software. I doubt that Sugarsync would be averse to getting a larger user base. The developers should see what they can do. That would make my Joli 0S experience Perfect!

OK, I’m a newbie to Linux in general. Comfortable enough around Windows and OS X.
I’m looking for 2 missing links which seem to dull my experience with any Linux Distro.
1) Why is it so darn difficult to locate and mount other network devices/drives/NAS? Yes I can always get around to locating where adn how its done, but can you Linux guys make it a headline and more intuitive.
2) Ditto for Network Printers. I Want to print! Set up a script front-ended with a big ICON which say PRINTERS and in that environment should be every which way to set up local or IP Printers…
Pretty please for the Newbie :)

Hi! please I can’t wait to see and taste the beta! mi user name is CarlosGarciaHeras . So more, i think it is really nice, some years from here and the computers would work on a web desktop, maybe it wouldn’t be needed to install anything, so i think your joli operative system is like the future may be. Maybe it would be great to have a feeds reader integrated, maybe it would be in the apliccations first page with facebook, twietter or anotherss feeds and the most used, liked applications as a startpage. Another cool thing would be the posibility to add another online storage services as it is done with dropbox or google doc in the file explore section. I don’t know if there is some generic option to do this without the need to configure each service, so we only have to enter the url as it is done with apliccations.
